Level 3 qualifications "for all classroom TAs"
All school staff supporting children's learning will need a level 3 qualification under new proposals from the Government.
The plans are in the new schools White Paper, Your child, your schools, our future: building a 21st century schools system.
Labour's education secretary Ed Balls has written to support staff outlining the Level 3 qualification requirement. He says all staff working to support pupils learning in the classroom will have or will be working towards a Level 3 qualification - the equivalent of A levels.
Balls doesn't make any commitment on pay except to say the new Support Staff Negotiating Body will examine how "the increased professionalism of support staff should be most appropriately reflected in their pay and conditions".
The White Paper also brings in a new School Report Card that will provide parents with information about different aspects of a school's performance.
